Best movies leaving streaming services in February

Editor’s noby: We’ll update this list of the best movies leaving streaming services every month to keep you up to date on what not to miss.

Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

HBO Max – Departure 25 February

Ryan Gosling in a Future Dystopia in Blade Runner 2049

It’s hard to imagine that a classic as iconic, original and genre-defining as Blade Runner could produce a sequel that does justice to the original. And yet, Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve managed it brilliantly in 2017’s Blade Runner 2049. Visually breathtaking and with some top-level performances, Villeneuve’s “legasequel” was even considered by many to be better than the original (but I would not completely so do not go) far, personally).

When an LAPD runner finds the remains of a replicant who was pregnant, he embarks on a search to find former runner Rick Deckard. The older robot hunter may have answers about the nature of the replicants, machines that may be more human than previously believed.

HBO Max

HBO Max is your home for movies and TV shows made by Warner Bros., such as The Lord of the Rings, the DC Comics superheroes and more. It is also home to new and original movies and shows that are not available anywhere else.

Labyrinth (1986)

Netflix – Departure February 26

David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly dance in Labyrinth - best movies leaving streaming services this month

A teenage girl travels to a magical world when her baby brother is taken by the mysterious Leprechaun King. While she wanted to get rid of him, she now realized she needed him back. First, she must travel through a maze to find him and get him back with the help of new friends she meets along the way.

With incredible puppetry by director Jim Henson, an iconic performance by David Bowie and dark images, it’s no wonder Labyrinth became a cult classic, despite a lukewarm reception when it came out. Do not miss this brilliant movie while it is still available to stream on Netflix.

Netflix Icon

Netflix

Netflix continues to be the leading premium streaming service, with more than 200 million subscribers worldwide. It offers thousands of movies and TV shows to watch, including its ever-growing list of original movies and series, including Stranger Things, The Witcher, Bridgerton, and many more.

13 Going on 30 (2004)

HBO Max – Departure 28 February

Jennifer Garner looks at herself in a mirror in 13 Going on 30

It’s hard to resist the charm of 13 Going on 30, a romantic comedy with a fantasy twist reminiscent of 1988’s Tom Hanks starring Big. When Jenna Rink’s 13th birthday party is a bust, she wants to leave her childhood behind once and for all. She wishes she was “thirty, flirty and thriving”. Little does she know the magical wishful thinking her friend Matt has given her really works, and she suddenly finds that she is, well, thirty, flirtatious and thriving. Jenna is now a successful fashion media editor who has it all. Or rather, it looks like she. Jenna soon realizes she’s become the kind of bully she’s always hated and tracks Matt down so he can help her get everything right.

If you, like me, enjoy returning to 13 Going on 30 as a solid consolation movie, you may want to catch it before leaving HBO Max. This is one of the best movies leaving streaming services in February.

Beverly Hills Cop (1984)

HBO Max – Departure 28 February

Eddie Murphy gives a good hand signal in Beverly Hills Cop - best movies leaving streaming services in February

Beverly Hills Cop, a classic Eddie Murphy, is a buddy cop comedy that has aged beautifully and remains a pleasure to watch almost 40 years later. This is truly one of the best movies leaving streaming services in February.

When his childhood friend is killed, a Detroit police officer takes matters into his own hands. Axel Foley wants answers, and he goes to Beverly Hills to find them – against his captain’s direct orders. Once there, Foley teams up with local cops, who are reluctant to accept Foley’s help. Together they can hopefully put their differences aside and find some justice.

Birds of prey (and the fantastic emancipation of one Harley Quinn) (2020)

HBO Max – Departure 28 February

The cast of Birds of Prey prepares for a fight - best movies leaving streaming services in February

Birds of Prey is one of the best DCEU movies and one of the best movies leaving streaming services this month. Despite being a Warner Bros. release, it unfortunately leaves HBO Max in February, so make sure you check it out before it’s gone.

Following the events of Suicide Squad (though they mostly ignore the events), Birds of Prey focuses on Harley Quinn and the unlikely team of (anti) heroes she gathers to tackle the terrifying crime boss Black Mask. The problem is, now that she does not have protection against her ex the Joker, it’s open season at Harley, and all the criminals in Gotham City want a piece.

Election (1999)

Hulu – departure on 28 February

Reese Witherspoon in the election

Alexander Payne’s 1999 comedy remains as clever and relevant as ever, and it’s worth watching before it leaves Hulu.

Election follows a popular high school civic teacher who becomes obsessed with one of his students, an overachiever who is elected class president. Convinced that she is the wrong choice for the student body, he plans to stop her. For that purpose, he enlists the help of a popular jock in his attempt to knock her off a pen. The film is dark, hilarious and whimsical in its depiction of power relations and American politics through the lens of education and student affairs.

Hulu

Hulu not only offers thousands of movies and TV shows to stream, it also has original shows and movies like The Handmaid’s Tale. You can upgrade to Hulu Plus Live TV to get live channels, including your local stations.

Fight Club (1999)

Hulu – departure on 28 February

Brad Pitt smokes after a fight in Fight Club - best movies leaving streaming services in February

Fight Club has gained a bit of a reputation over the years as a toxic brother film, supported by posters in dorm rooms everywhere. However, it’s a brilliant bit of satire, and it’s not entirely fair to judge a movie by its worst fans and those who misunderstand its core message. David Fincher does a brilliant job of unpacking machismo and empty male rebellion in his 1999 adaptation of the Chuck Palahniuk novel, one of the best movies leaving streaming services this month.

Fight Club follows a disgruntled and depressed man who forges a friendship with an enigmatic soap salesman. Together they form an underground fighting club for men looking for an outlet from their everyday lives. The club is growing and the interests are rising fast, and soon it is on an unstoppable path to social chaos.

Gone Girl (2014)

Hulu – departure on 28 February

Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike Flank in a Bookstore in Gone Girl

David Fincher fans may be saddened to hear that a second of his films will leave Hulu in February. Gone Girl deserves a cult following since its inception, with viewers taking apart the narrative twists and disturbing implications. Gillian Flynn does an excellent job of adapting her own hit novel, with Fincher directing one of his best outings.

Nick and Amy Dunne are the perfect portrait of marital happiness. Or they are until Amy goes missing. As Nick rises to the top of the police suspicion list, we watch as the image of their fairytale marriage unravels. As we learn what happened to Amy, our perception of relationships, of gender dynamics, and of the truths we may not always recognize are challenged until the film’s brilliant last moments.

The Mexican (2001)

Hulu – departure on 28 February

Brad Pitt approaches a dog in The Mexican

Before his mega-hit Pirates of the Caribbean and even before his cold J-horror remake The Ring, Gore Verbinski directed a modest little adventure comedy. The Mexican portrays Brad Pitt as a criminal crook on one last job for his mob boss. Finally ready to go straight, he must transport a rare rifle back to America across the Mexican border. The problem is that his girlfriend had it with his criminal manners. His last job could mean the end of their relationship.

Scenes that bring together Julia Roberts and the late James Gandolfini stand out especially in this woefully underrated remnant of 2000s mid-budget Hollywood filmmaking. Watch it while it’s still streaming on Hulu.

The Raid 2 (2014)

Hulu – departure on 28 February

Men aim their guns in The Raid 2

After the bloody, action-packed events of 2011’s The Raid, The Raid 2 sees Rama go undercover in hopes of protecting his family from the target on his back. He goes to jail and soon finds himself climbing the ranks of a criminal empire. The interests continue to rise as he fights his way to the top. He will take down as many bad guys as he can along the way.

The Raid 2 is one of the best movies leaving streaming services. It’s also one of the best action movies of the 21st century, period. Do not miss this gem of Indonesian action movie.

Sinister (2012)

Hulu – departure on 28 February

Ethan Hawke stands in front of a screen where a grizzly murder is projected in Sinister - best movies leaving streaming services this month

Writer-director Scott Derickson and screenwriter C. Robert Cargill made a knock-out horror film with a small budget in 2012 before teaming up again on Doctor Strange for Marvel Studios. Sinister, starring Ethan Hawke, is a disturbing tale of a man obsessed with the dark history of his new home.

The true crime writer Ellison Oswald is trying to get his career back on track. As such, he moves his family to a home where a heinous crime has been committed. Soon he discovers film of the incident and others like it. As he investigates, he realizes that there may be a supernatural force behind the deaths. And it may not have gone away.
