Ashleigh Barty Vs. Jessica Pegula preview

Barty is attempting to become the first Australian woman to win this tournament since 1978, when Chris O’Neil defeated American Betsy Nagelsen for her only career grand slam title. Barty is seeking her third after having won the 2019 French Open and Wimbledon last year. Her only quarterfinal victory in the Australian Open came in 2020 against Petra Kvitova.

Amanda Anisimova gave Barty her toughest test in the tournament thus far but still lasted only 74 minutes, losing 6-4, 6-3 in the fourth round. Barty dropped only three games over the first two matches and knocked off No. 30 seed Camila Giorgi 6-2, 6-3 in the third round. She had similar ease in her only career matchup against Pegula, posting a 6-3, 6-3 victory in the first round of the 2019 French Open.

Pegula made her first quarterfinal appearance in a grand slam last year in Melbourne and got off to a strong start against Jennifer Brady but eventually succumbed, 6-4, 2-6, 1-6. The 27-year-old American returns to the round of eight after pulling off a 7-6 (7-0), 6-3 upset against the fifth-seeded and world No. 8 Maria Sakkari. The victory marked the eighth time in her career that Pegula has defeated an opponent ranked in the top 10, with the first coming in this tournament last year (Elina Svitolina, fourth round).
