2022 NFL Off-Season Schedule


As we saw yesterday with the 49ers making changes to their coaching staff and signing 11 players to sign reserve / future contracts, there really is no ‘off season’ for the NFL.

After the off-season game ends, the league calendar shifts to the NFL Scouting Combine, which runs from March 1 to 7 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.

While the official start of the 2022 NFL year is March 16 when free agency kicks off, the unofficial kickoff to free agency is March 14. This is when clubs are allowed to contact the certified agents of players and enter into contract negotiations with the players who will become unlimited free agents

The timeline below gives a clear picture of what is to come.

2022 NFL Key Dates

February 3 – East-West Shrine Bowl, Allegiant Stadium: Las Vegas, Nevada.

February 5 – Senior Bowl, Hancock Whitney Stadium: Mobile, Alabama.

February 6 – NFL Pro Bowl, Allegiant Stadium: Las Vegas, Nevada.

February 8 – 2021 CFL player contracts expire at 12:00 pm New York time.

As of 12:01, New York time, NFL clubs may no longer try out, negotiate with CFL players and / or sign CFL players with 2022 contracts.

February 13 – Super Bowl LVI, SoFi Stadium: Inglewood, California.

February 14 – Exemption system begins for 2022.

February 19 – HBCU Legacy Bowl, Yulman Stadium: New Orleans, Louisiana.

February 22 – First day for clubs to nominate franchise or transfer players.

March 1-7 – NFL Scouting Combine, Lucas Oil Stadium: Indianapolis, Indiana.

March 8 – Before 4pm, New York time, deadline for clubs to nominate franchise or transfer players.

March 14-16 – Clubs are allowed to contact the players’ certified agents and enter into contract negotiations with the players who will become Unlimited Free Agents upon the expiration of their 2021 player contracts at 16:00, New York time, at 16:00 March.

March 16 – Before 16:00, New York time, clubs must exercise options for 2022 on all players who have option clauses in their 2021 contracts.

March 16 – Before 16:00, New York time, clubs must submit qualifying offers to their Limited Free Agents with contracts expiring to retain a Right of First Refusal / Compensation.

March 16 – Before 16:00, New York time, clubs must submit a minimum wage tender to retain exclusive bargaining rights to their players with contracts expiring in 2021 that have less than three accumulated seasons of free agency credit.

March 16 – Top 51 line begins. All clubs must be below the 2022 salary limit before 4pm, New York time.

March 16 – All 2021 player contracts expire at 4pm, New York time.

March 16 – The 2022 league year and free agency season begins at 4 p.m., New York time.

March 16 – The first day of the 2022 league year will end on March 16 at 11:59:59 p.m., New York time. Clubs will receive a staff notice that will include all transactions submitted to the league office during the period between 4:00 pm, New York time, and 11:59:59 pm, New York time on March 16th.

March 16 – Trading period for 2022 begins at 4pm, New York time, after expiration of all 2021 contracts.

Late March – International Player Pathway Pro Day (TBD)

March 27-30 – Annual League Meeting: Palm Beach, Florida.

April 4 – Clubs who have appointed a new head coach after the end of the 2021 season can start off-season training programs.

April 18 – Clubs with returning head coaches can start off-season training programs.

April 22 – Deadline for limited free agents to sign offer sheets.

April 28-30 – 2022 NFL Draft: Las Vegas, Nevada.

May 2 – Deadline for previous club to send “May 2 Tender” to its unsigned unlimited free agents. If the player has not signed a player contract with a club by July 22 or the first scheduled day of the first NFL practice camp, whichever is later, he may negotiate or sign a player contract from that date until the Tuesday follows on the 10th weekend of the regular season, at 4pm, New York time, with his previous club only.

May 2 – Deadline for clubs to exercise fifth-year option for players selected in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft.

May 6-9 or May 13-16 – Clubs can choose to hold their one three-day post-draft rookie mini-camp from Friday to Sunday or Saturday to Monday on one of the two weekends following the Draft.

May 16 – Newcomer Football Development Programs Launch.

May 19-22 (Attemptive) – NFLPA Rookie Premiere, TBD. Invited newcomers (usually, first- and / or second-round picks) must be allowed by their respective clubs to attend. Such players are not available for off-season training sessions, OTA days and mini-camps during this period.

May 23-25 ​​- Spring League Meeting.

June 1 – Deadline for previous club to send “June 1 Tender” to its unsigned Limited Free Agents who have only received a qualifying offer for a right of first refusal so that such player can be subject to the CBA’s “June 15 Tender “provision.

June 15 – Club deadline to withdraw qualifying offer to Limited Free Agents and still retain exclusive bargaining rights by replacing “June 15 Tender” of one-year contract with 110 per cent of player’s previous year Paragraph 5 Salary (with all other terms of transferred his contract from previous year unchanged).

Late June – Newcomer readiness program is held at individual clubs.
