2022 WM Phoenix Open fantasy golf picks, rankings, sleepers: Back Hideki Matsuyama, fade Viktor Hovland

Fans will be back at one of the PGA Tour’s most popular venues this week when the 2022 Waste Management Phoenix Open tees off Thursday at TPC Scottsdale. The crowd was limited to 5,000 per day last year because of the pandemic, but upwards of 200,000 are expected at times this weekend. The 2022 WM Phoenix Open field includes six of the world’s top 10 players, as well as two-time Phoenix Open champions Hideki Matsuyama (2016, 2017) and Brooks Koepka (2015, 2021). Caesars Sportsbook lists world No. 1 Jon Rahm as the 15-2 favorite in its latest 2022 WM Phoenix Open golf odds from Caesars Sportsbook, followed by Justin Thomas at 12-1. Patrick Cantlay is priced at 14-1, with Matsuyama (18-1), Viktor Hovland (18-1), Xander Schauffele (22-1) and Jordan Spieth (22-1) also among the top contenders.

Will Rahm finally win in his hometown after finishing in the top 10 in three of his previous six tries? Or would taking longer shots like Sam Burns (33-1) set you up better with your 2022 WM Phoenix Open Fantasy golf picks? Before you make your Fantasy golf rankings or lock in any bets on the 2022 WM Phoenix Open, you need to check out the Fantasy golf projections and lineup advice from SportsLine fantasy expert Riley Gates.

Gates is a writer for 247Sports and has covered a range of sports for nearly five years. He has followed golf closely for much longer and has a profound knowledge of the sport. He also knows what it takes to win, on the course and in fantasy sports.

In last week’s picks for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, eight of Gates’ selections finished in the top 16, with his top three all posting top-10 finishes. That included Spieth, who rallied from 11 strokes down after 36 holes and fell just short of the victory,

The expert has been on a roll all season. At The American Express, four of his top five selections finished in the top 15, and he nailed his picks at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, with four of his top seven picks posting top-five finishes.

And at the Hero World Challenge, again four of his top seven finished in the top five. Anyone who has followed Gates is way up.

Now, Gates has ranked his top 20 golfers for the 2022 WM Phoenix Open. You can only see his fantasy golf rankings and Waste Management Phoenix Open picks at SportsLine.

2022 WM Phoenix Open Fantasy golf expert picks

Gates is fully expecting Matsuyama to continue his strong play at TPC Scottsdale, where he has finished in the top five four times. He went 31-under over his two victories, and he has finished in the top 25 in six of his seven full events (he withdrew after a first-round 69 in 2018). The Japanese star also has two victories in his last four events on tour, and he is 67 under par over those four. He is 20th in scoring average (70,052) and 11th in strokes gained tee-to-green.

On the other hand, the expert expects Hovland to get off to a slow start and ranks him outside his top five. The Norwegian star has spent the past month in Europe, winning in Dubai and tying for fourth at Abu Dhabi in that time. He also has wins at Mayakoba and at the unofficial Hero World Challenge. He tied for 30th in his last tour outing at the Sentry. He has really struggled around the green (218th in strokes gained) and is 130th in strokes gained tee-to-green.

How to set your 2022 WM Phoenix Open Fantasy golf rankings

For this week at TPC Scottsdale, the fantasy expert is backing a massive long shot who is listed at around 40-1. This veteran has been on fire in recent weeks, shooting in the 60’s in 12 of his last 15 rounds and posting impressive results. He has been hitting a lot of greens and putting well, which is always a recipe for success in Scottsdale. Gates sees him as a must-play for your Waste Management Fantasy golf picks.
