2022 WWE Royal Rumble predictions, map, matches, start time, PPV preview, location, date

One of the tent pole WWE PPV events of the year is here. The classic match of 30 participants on both the men’s and women’s side will take place on Saturday night inside The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis, Missouri, ranks as the promotion’s second PPV of the new year. The show also kicks off the official “Road to WrestleMania” as WWE begins construction on the massive spectacle that will take place in April.

Almost every superstar on the list will be involved in the PPV in one way or another, given the 60 total participants in both Rumble matches, but there is even more to be excited about on the undercard with three championship matches as well. WWE Champion Brock Lesnar will try to retain his belt when he tackles former champion Bobby Lashley in a nearly 15-year match in the making. On top of that, Universal champion Roman Reigns will take on the fight with an old friend who became a rival when he takes on Seth Rollins. And Raw women’s title holder Becky Lynch will try to make another defense against Doudrop.

With all this in mind, there is a lot that could happen on Saturday night and almost everything with huge consequences for WrestleMania.

Let’s take a closer look at who our CBS Sports experts predict will come out on top at WWE Royal Rumble, which starts at 8pm and streams live on Peacock to a kick-off program one hour earlier.

2022 WWE Royal Rumble predictions

Edge & Beth Phoenix vs. The Miz & Maryse

This rivalry should end Saturday with Edge and Beth Phoenix ‘hands up. This is the natural conclusion to the rivalry between the two couples. Edge is clearly WWE’s A side and Phoenix should not return just to put Maryse, a fellow part-time, over. Edge and Phoenix with their hands up is the most likely outcome. Choose: Edge and Beth Phoenix – Shakiel Mahjouri (also Brent Brookhouse)

Raw Women’s Championship – Becky Lynch (c) vs. Doudrop

It would be hard to imagine Doudrop picking up the title in this match in regular circumstances, but it’s almost impossible to think as WrestleMania approaches. Lynch will be at a pronounced spot at WrestleMania and will be in that spot as Raw women’s champion, possibly defending against the winner of the Royal Rumble for women. Doudrop can boost her profile with a good performance and that should be the bigger goal here. Select: Becky Lynch retains title – Brookhouse (also Mahjouri)

Universal Championship – Roman Reigns (c) vs. Seth Rollins

My thought process is generally one of those at Lesnar vs. Reigns to come out at WrestleMania without both titles tied in the fight. So, who loses their belt? Lesnar won the title as a sort of knee-jerk reaction to Reigns’ removal from Day 1 after his COVID-19 diagnosis. Meanwhile, Reigns built a record-breaking championship. With that in mind, it makes sense to return to the story of Lesnar-hunting Reigns and the universal title, which means Rollins must take the loss here. Select: Roman Reigns retains the title. – Brookhouse

WWE was eager to have Seth Rollins enter World Wrestling Championship for WrestleMania with a World Championship chaos. Much has been made in the storyline about Reigns’ inability to win over his former Shield friend in championship games. If Reigns enters the Royal Rumble and earns his chance at Brock Lesnar (we get to that in a second), he will have to relinquish the title to Rollins that same evening. Select: Seth Rollins wins the title – Mahjouri

WWE Championship – Brock Lesnar (c) vs. Bobby Lashley

As stated on the Reigns vs. Rollins prediction, WWE to return to Reigns being chased by Lesnar requires Lesnar to drop the belt. Raw is in a much better place with potential challengers for Lashley for WrestleMania than SmackDown for Lesnar. There are many ways for Lashley to beat Lesnar, including just to achieve a completely clean win. WWE finally turned Lashley into a full force and they can continue to build it at the Rumble. Select: Bobby Lashley wins the title – Brookhouse

WWE just loves to field championships around the middle of former UFC heavyweight junior Brock Lesnar. It would be strange for the promotion to host one of its most capable stars with the WWE Championship, only to take it away 28 days later. Furthermore, Lesnar must look scary on the way to the eventual rematch with Reigns. Lesnar vs. Lashley is a mouth-watering main course of MMA and pro-wrestling goodness. Lashley needs to be made to look competitive with Lesnar, but ultimately the result will be “and still”. Select: Brock Lesnar retains title – Mahjouri

Women’s Royal Rumble Match

Honestly, there are more likely choices to win this year’s Rumble than Naomi. There have been reports of an impending return for Ronda Rousey through WrestleMania and this has convinced people that she will return on Saturday night. WWE can also choose to correct how wrong they did Bianca Belair at SummerSlam by letting her triumph over 29 other women. In the storyline, there are few better contenders than Naomi. She was wronged at every turn by authority figure Sonya Deville, especially in moments of victory over SmackDown Women’s champion Charlotte Flair. What better way to navigate around Deville’s betrayal than to win the Rumble. Choose: Naomi to win – Mahjouri

Personally, I hope the fact that WWE has loaded the women’s roar with contestants who are not even active WWE contracted wrestlers was eye-opening for the promotion. Although I appreciate Shak’s Naomi choice and the idea that she’s going through to a WrestleMania spot and a title win, it just does not feel like the “big swing” that WWE is going to take for their biggest show of the year. With that in mind, there are two good choices. First, they were able to make Bianca Belair win a second Royal Rumble match and really build up her legacy. Or, they can call in Ronda Rousey. With the rumors of a Rousey return, it feels just like an easy game to let Rousey win the Rumble and move on to a main event venue at WrestleMania against any brand’s champion. Choose: Ronda Rousey to win – Brookhouse

Mans Royal Rumble Match

As the final step of our three-step predictions, Lesnar, after losing his title to Lashley earlier in the evening – possibly through interference from The Usos – immediately closes back on Reigns and forces his way to the Rumble. Lesnar then jerks through the competition before winning the whole thing and choosing Reigns as his WrestleMania opponent. For a little extra boost, MVP and Lashley can claim Lesnar ran away from his winner and a rematch could be held in the back pocket for somewhere along the way. Choose: Brock Lesnar to win – Brookhouse

Let me make it clear, Roman Reigns should not win the Royal Rumble. Rumor has it that Reigns was scheduled to leave the Universal Championship on Day 1 to Brock Lesnar and that Seth Rollins was expected to win the WWE Championship the same night. WWE can, of course, rectify this by having Reigns lose to Rollins, perhaps courtesy of some Lesnar complaint, and then enter the Rumble to take his revenge on “The Beast Incarnate.” Choose: Roman Reigns to Win – Mahjouri
