Andy Murray Nets First win at Australian Open in Five-Years

Andy Murray

(January 18, 2022) Day 2 of the Australian Open saw five-time Australian Open runner-up Andy Murray win his first match in Melbourne in five years when he rallied for a five-set win over 21st-seeded Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-1 , 3-6, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-4 to reach the second round. The Scot came into Melbourne with a wild card.

He missed last year’s tournament because of COVID-19.

“It’s been a tough three, four years. Put in a lot of work to get back here, ”Murray said in his post-match on-court at John Cain Arena, which was formerly known as Hisense and has been given the nickname the People’s Court. “I’ve played on this court many times, the atmosphere is incredible. This is the one where I thought I’d played my last.

“Amazing to be back, winning a five-set battle like that. Couldn’t ask for more. ”

“Would love to have a deep run here, if possible.

“It’s something I’ve not had in one of the Slams since I’ve come back from the injury, and it’s something that’s motivating me.”

Next for Murray is Taro Daniel, a qualifier.
