Former Boston Red Sox coach Tom Goodwin says MLB bullied coaches for getting COVID-19 vaccine: ‘There was no choice’
Former Red Sox first base coach Tom Goodwin spoke on Major League Baseball on Friday, telling Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic that the league had “bullied” coaches and other non-playing staff to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, even though they were against.
Goodwin, who spent four seasons on Boston’s staff before being released immediately after the 2021 season, missed several games in close contact during the regular season and had to walk away from the Red Sox offseason at the start of the offseason because unvaccinated staff members did not. allowed to enter the playing field during the play-off matches. He has since been vaccinated and has accepted a job with the Braves as a traveling minor league off-field instructor; he did not receive any major league coaching offers, according to Rosenthal.
Because players are part of a union, Major League Baseball cannot mandate that they be vaccinated. Coaches and other team members, who are not part of a union, are a different story. The league has yet to decide on a vaccination policy for major league coaches in 2022, but it is clear that teams strongly prefer that their staff members be vaccinated in case MLB shots give them instructions.
