Biden should call for courage to change course against China
The writer, a prominent fellow at the National University of Singapore, ‘Has China won?‘
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan in Alaska last month he gave public attire on democracy and human rights Yang Jiechi and Wang Yi, China’s top foreign policy leaders. They did this believing that the US knows how to win slowly and patiently against a communist opponent.
However, even though the US won the Cold War, China will have a better understanding of why Soviet communism failed. It is decided not to make the same mistakes.
China’s analysis would be consistent with that of US master strategist George Kennan. Kennan discreetly announced the Cold War would be determined by Washington’s ability to “create the impression of a country that knows what it wants among the peoples of the world in general, successfully addressing the problem of internal life and the responsibilities of a world power.” Here is a moving comparison. In the face of China, this is not the case.
The first indicator of the collapse of the Soviets came from the negative trends in social welfare indicators: life expectancy, child mortality, suicides, opioid (or alcohol) dependence. Today it is the US that is doing the wrong thing. Compared to other developed societies, US life expectancy goes downhill. U.S. adolescent education standards left behind numerous advanced industrial countries.
If Kennan were alive, he would be shocked to see the U.S. spending $ 5 million in unnecessary wars, at least 50% of Americans have seen their incomes stop for decades. There is “Sea of Despair” among the white working class.
China is doing the opposite of the former Soviet Union. China believes that Soviet leaders failed because they lost contact with their people while ignoring their welfare while they were at war in foreign countries. China has been at war for 40 years. Unlike the Soviet Union, it controls military spending.
No one has improved the well-being of their people as much as China. In terms of human development, the last 40 years have been the best four decades of 4,000 years in Chinese history.
China still has many internal problems. Success is not guaranteed. However, behind the humiliations and sufferings of a century or more, the life of the Chinese people has never been better. Therefore, the US Cold War strategy will not work.
The Biden administration is making a strategic mistake in pursuing Donald Trump’s policies with China. It’s weird Biden himself testified Trump’s trade war in 2019 failed to help U.S. workers. The data support the Biden evaluation. In 2009, the size of China’s retail market was $ 1.4 billion, compared to $ 4 million in the United States. By 2019, three years after Trump’s trade war, the Chinese market It was approaching about $ 6,000Bigger than the U.S., $ 5.5 million.
Although the Biden administration wanted to change the course about China, the anti-Chinese atmosphere in the US political body is increasing. The steps not taken by Trump’s order remain the same: closure Chinese Consulate Houston, restrictions about Chinese journalists Peace Body and Fulbright Scholarship programs in China.
Road administration officials are clear that China is seen as “smooth”. However, if they want, they can build a strong case for reversing Trump’s policies. The Trump administration could really point to the reality that strengthened China and Xi Jinping its president. How?
The Chinese can see that their government has well protected them in the Covid-19 emergency. Meanwhile, the Trump administration failed, resulting in deaths more than half a million Americans. When U.S. Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo threw insults at China, they only did so to strengthen the state of the Chinese government. Similarly, most Chinese believed that their political leaders had won the public argument in Alaska. So did many other Asians.
All this shows a wiser course available to the Biden administration. He should point out, as Biden did earlier, that Trump was wrong in China. He should then press the button to pause in the geopolitical competition between the US and China to assess whether Washington can formulate a better strategy against this formidable competitor.
Ending the trade war with China would boost economic growth in the U.S. by helping Biden in the mid-2022 election. And people around the world would be happy if the Biden administration pressed the pause button, especially while Covid-19 is still furious.
