Breakout Ravens in 2022 – Russell Street Report Breakout Ravens

Now that mandatory minicamp has officially come to an end, fans are fortunate to have caught a glimpse of what this year’s team is shaping up to look like. With so many players returning from injury, several Ravens dressed for the first time in a while. In this article we will look at some early breakout candidates who are either looking to make a comeback in 2022 or in the case of one rookie, make an immediate impact.

Rashod Bateman

Starting off this list is wide receiver Rashod Bateman, who many sources have already named as a top breakout candidate in the league ahead of this upcoming season. After the Arizona Cardinals traded for Marquise Brown in this year’s draft, all eyes moved to Bateman who is expected to remain as the team’s WR1 as the season draws closer. Last year, Bateman sustained a groin injury at training camp that prevented him from playing until Week 6. Despite this, he was able to haul in 46 receptions for 515 yards and a single touchdown. While these numbers may not be the most impressive, it is important to keep in mind that Bateman was part of a Ravens offense that only had Lamar Jackson until Week 15. Now that both Brown and Sammy Watkins are out of the picture, Bateman will have the opportunity to excel at the top of the depth chart, assuming that the front office refrains from signing any extra receivers before September.

JK Dobbins

Looking to make a big comeback is running back JK Dobbins, who was unable to play at all last year following his devastating ACL tear against Washington during the preseason. Dobbins had a very impressive rookie season in 2020, averaging 6.0 yards per rushing attempt while finishing the campaign with nine touchdowns. While many suspected 2021 to be the year for Dobbins to shine, expect to see his numbers improve this season as long as he continues to stay healthy. Dobbins is already listed at RB1 on the depth chart following the departure of Devonta Freeman and Latavious Murray, and looks to return with the best offensive line this team has had since his arrival in 2020.

Isaiah Likely

One rookie who has already started turning heads during OTA’s is tight end Isaiah Likely, who was drafted in the fourth round of this year’s draft with the 139th pick.

Likely put on an impressive display at mandatory minicamp this month, earning praise from several notable teammates including Lamar Jackson and Mark Andrews. As the Ravens are known to sometimes use multiple tight ends in formation, Likely and Andrews could share the field quite a bit this upcoming season. While Likely has enough size to block (6’4, 240 lbs), it’s his catching ability that has created all the buzz. Last year at Coastal Carolina, he posted 912 receiving yards courtesy of 59 receptions (highest of his career) to go with 12 touchdowns.

Iman Marshall

Perhaps one of the most under-the-radar players on this current Ravens roster is cornerback Iman Marshall, who has not played since 2019 after missing the past two seasons with torn ACLs. While Marshall finds himself at a very crowded position on this Ravens defense, he will have to prove his worth before the 53-man roster is decided.

Marshall had proven himself a consistent player during his time at USC. He recorded nearly 40 solo tackles in each of the four years he played. By the end of his collegiate career, he raked in a whopping 146 solo tackles and 72 assisted tackles, ending with 218 combined. Despite not having played for some time, a healthy Marshall will be looking to contribute again— once he finds his place in a talented group of cornerbacks.

Odafe Oweh

Next on this list is outside linebacker Odafe Oweh, who will be entering his second year in the NFL. Oweh’s rookie year in the league was decent, as he ended up with a total of 33 tackles (23 of which were solo) and 5 sacks. He also led the team in forced fumbles (3). Oweh is currently listed first on the depth chart at weak side linebacker, an improvement from his placement last year which was behind Tyus Bowser at strong side linebacker. With Justin Houston yet to return to Baltimore, the stars are aligning for Oweh to have his best year in the league.

Patrick Queen

Last but certainly not least is linebacker Patrick Queen, who is currently entering his third year in the league. Queen led the team in combined tackles last season, ending the year with a total of ninety-eight. However, Queen has been open with reporters about his disappointment with his sophomore season, as he was pulled off the field for fewer snaps about midway through the year. Queen is looking to have a bigger role under new Defensive Coordinator Mike Macdonald, tell reporters in his June 8th press conference, “I’m comfortable now, everything is in a rhythm, so now that I can be in those positions, I can stay on the field all the time now. ”

If Queen is able to prove himself as a three-down linebacker, expect him to have his best year yet.
