Brewers hires Matt Klentak as special assistant

January 27: Although Klentak’s formal title is special assistant to baseball president David Stearns and general manager Matt Arnold, he will actually oversee the team’s international reconnaissance division, tweets MLB.com is Adam McCalvy. That responsibility previously fell under the authority of the vice president of player staff Mike Groopman, but he was hired by the Red Sox in November as an assistant general manager.

Furthermore, Stearns has indicated to reporters that Klentak’s role at the club is expected to eventually increase (Twitter link via Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel). “As he becomes more familiar with our processes, we look forward to his contributions in other areas as well,” Stearns said of Klentak.

January 23: The Brewers have hired Matt Klentak for a special assistant role, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Matt Gelb (Twitter link). Since stepping down as the Phillies’ general manager in October 2020, Klentak has continued to work in Philadelphia’s front office as a strategy and development officer, and Rosenthal notes that Klentak will leave a year before his contract with the Phils.

While Klentak is best known for his time in Philadelphia, Klentak has nearly 20 years of baseball experience, including games at the Rockies, the Orioles, MLB’s Labor Relations Division, and four years as an assistant chief at the English. Klentak moved from Los Angeles to Philadelphia after being named the Phillies’ GM in October 2015.

Klentak took over a Phillies team amid a rebuild, but the Phils never set a winning record over Klentak’s five seasons in charge, even after turning the tide and signing several bigger-name veterans who was on its way to the 2018 campaign. an 81-81 record in 2019 was the best the Phillies could manage under Klentak while the club gained Bryce Harper, JT Realmuto, Andrew McCutchen, Jean Seguraand many other prominent players, the Phils still could not crack the .500 notch.

Of course, not all of Klentak’s major acquisitions worked out, and yet the former GM fared better than most in getting premium veteran talent for the roster. The bigger problem was apparently a lack of help from within, such as outside Aaron Nola and Rhys Hoskins, the Phillies had trouble developing internal prospects to provide extra (and cheaper) production alongside the more expensive names like Harper. After the club scored 28-32 in 2020, Klentak retired as GM, though the Phillies only reappointed him rather than let him leave the organization altogether.

Client branch will now provide Brewers’ president of baseball operations David Stearns and GM Matt Arnold with another experienced voice in Milwaukee’s front office. It is not yet known what Klentak’s specific duties will be with the Brewers, as “special assistant” responsibilities tend to vary according to the team’s needs and the talents of the individual in the position. Klentak is the latest known name to join the Brewers as a special assistant, as the team also includes Doug Melvin, Charles VillanuevaDick Groch, Quinton McCrackenand Nick Davis working under that title in various departments.
