By Jim Calfa: Coach / manager Eddy Reynoso is already outlining the destinations for his fighter Canelo Alvarez for his May and September fights, and says he wants him to fight in Las Vegas and Mexico.
Mastermind Reynoso is the one who decides who the 31-year-old superstar Canelo (57-1-2, 39 KOs) fights for, and he says he would like to see him face the “media-friendly”. Jermall Charlo and Gennady Golovkin.
If those two fights subside in 2022, Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) is likely to be Canelo’s opponent for the Cinco de Mayo holiday weekend on May 7 on Showtime PPV.
Jermall will be followed by a trilogy match with his arch-enemy Golovkin (41-1-1, 36 KOs) in Mexico City on September 17 on the Mexican Independence Day holiday.
Fans want to see Canelo upgrade its competition
After sitting for the past two years watching Canelo destroy 168-pound champions from Britain, it will be a pleasure for boxing fans to see the Mexican star with Jermall (32-0, 22 KOs) and Golovkin in 2022 veg.
Those two would at least have a chance to beat Canelo, and it would not be the common misconduct we’ve seen over the past two years of the Mexican superstar.
“We are looking to fight in May and September. The first one in the USA and the last one in Mexico, “said coach / manager Reynoso. Fight Hub TV about his plans for Canelo Alvarez’s two fights in 2022.
“Let’s see if we can fight in the Azteca Stadium [in Mexico City with seating capacity: 87,523]. Hopefully we get a chance to fight there, “Reynoso said about Canelo’s fight in September this year.
WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitri Bivol is a possibility for Canelo to fight next on May 7, as he is part of a two-fight deal offered to British star by British promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing.
Hearn promoted the unbeaten 31-year-old Bivol (19-0, 11 KOs), and he also collaborates with superstar Golovkin. As such, Hearn Canelo offers to fight Bivol and GGG in 2022, which would take place on the DAZN streaming platform.
The deal Canelo offered to confront Jermall Charlo is from Premier Boxing Champions [PBC]and it will be a one-on-one situation.
Reynoso’s praise of Jermall, 32, suggests he intends to go in that direction for Canelo’s next fight in May rather than agree to Hearn’s two-fight deal.
Hearn’s deal would involve Alvarez moving up to 175 for a risky match against unbeaten Russian Bivol, followed by the trilogy match against Golovkin.
Reynoso no longer talks about Ilunga Makabu
Fortunately, Reynoso seems to have abandoned his strange idea of having Canelo move up to crossweight to tackle WBC champion Ilunga Makabu for a fifth-division world title. It was probably a funny idea Reynoso had about wanting Canelo to move up to crossweight to face Makabu.
It is believed that the networks were not interested in broadcasting a match between Canelo and the unknown 34-year-old Makabu because they realized that there would be no interest from fans in this fight at albatross level.
In 2021, Canelo got its way his old sparring partner Avni Yildirim fights on DAZN as part of its contract with them. Yet, now that the Mexican star is a free agent, he has to fight quality opposition to interest the networks.
The networks are not broadcasting flops on television in which Canelo fights against weak opposition that the boxing public is not interested in watching.
If Canelo & Reynoso wanted to please the fans in 2022, they could not go wrong with Jermall Charlo, Golovkin and David Benavidez. These are the ‘Big Three’ fans who want to see Canelo fight in 2022.
The fans are NOT interested in seeing Canelo fight Makabu or any of the obscure fighters they have never heard of before.
