CC earns 2nd at Talladega

Brad Keselowski took second place in the rain-soaked NASCAR Cup Series event at Talladega Superspeedway on Monday afternoon. Keselowski finished his eighth top-five finish of the 2021 season and is 20 points ahead of eighth-place finishers in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs.

Keselowski started seventh and ran strong throughout Phase 1. The driver of the Discount Tire Ford took the lead in lap 39 and again in lap 43, flashed by Denny Hamlin and led the next 11 laps. The former Champion ran third when the caution came from round 57, three laps from the end of the segment and forced the shift to finish cautiously, leaving Keselowski with a third place finish.

Rain played a big factor in Phase 2. The race was stopped at lap 73 for 18 minutes by rain. When the race resumed, Keselowski ran out of fuel just before the race turned green again on lap 77. Keselowski ran near the front of the leader when Alex Bowman turned in lap 98, but Keselowski navigated cleanly through the skirmish. The extra careful laps gave Keselowski and team manager Jeremy Bullins confidence that they could get through with fuel to the end of the inning.

Keselowski restarted sixth and was shuffled outside the top-10 five laps later, but he worked the concept and returned to third in lap 113. With the rain approaching and the intensity of the races increasing, Keselowski was in a struggle for position at the forefront of the lead concept. He overtook teammate Joey Logano on lap 117 for second just before a rainstorm hit the track, forcing NASCAR officials to stop the race again, this time forever.

“A very intense Talladega race and would not expect anything else. We put ourselves in a good position the whole race and I’m really proud of that. We were very close to making a move on Bubba to win the shift and the race, but I did not need that rain. I needed two or three more laps, “said Keselowski. “I think it was a good race for our Discount Tire team, and we put ourselves in a position not to have to go to the Roval and have a hero’s day. We just need a solid day. ”
