The 2020 The French Open champion, clearly chased and rattled by her opponent’s lap and track position, dropped the discount when her cross-track backhand ran wide. Collins missed 3/5 serve first, but with aggressive ball hitting, the halftime consolidated and extracted errors from her opponent.

Swiatek opened with a bait and although she made another double fault and faced a two-point lead, she 1-4. While Collins continued to dictate play to cuddle or step inside the baseline, her opponent earned a break point with a fantastic inside-in advance. The world #9 opened the seventh game with a double fault and failed to consolidate the halftime break as she was unable to counter her opponent’s deep returns. Swiatek, who served to stay in the set, consolidated the break behind a remarkable forehand along the line and well-placed service. Collins maintained her intensity and aggressive mindset when she served for the set for the second time. Although she donated another double fault, she hit two aces and secured the set 6-4 when Swiatek gained a foothold after a fascinating, extensive rally.

Swiatek, overwhelmed by her opponent’s weight of shot and aggressive track position, lost service and the game when Collins took the rocket out of her hand with successive rally and return winners.

Though it was a seemingly one-sided affair, count on her next opponent to bring every tool into her box. Ash Barty, the world #1 and two-time grand slam champion is Australian. Collins must therefore not only subdue her opponent, but the partisan crowd as she hopes to secure the final prize of the match.

They had played four times before, twice on clay, twice hard with Barty leading head-to-head 3-1. Collins, who is on track for the most important game of her career, will definitely draw confidence from winning their last game last season in straight on the hard track in Adelaide.
