FRIDAY, April 2, 2021 (HealthDay News) – Combining stem cell transplants with spikes immunotherapy prevents leukemia it is repeated in young people and improves their chances of survival, according to new research.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia it is the most common childhood cancer.

This study included 50 patients (4-30 years of age) with acute lymphoblastic leukemia who received CAR T cell therapy. Treatment genetically modifies the patient’s immune cells to make them more effective in killing cancer. (CAR is a summary of the chimeric antigen receptor.)

While CAR-T provides complete cell therapy forgiveness between 60% and 100% of patients initially, many recur. According to one study, more than 40% recurred 13 months after the end of treatment.

This research has investigated whether stem cell transplants can help prevent recurrence of patients who have undergone CAR T cell treatment.

Of the 21 patients who received a donor transplant stem cells After CAR T cell therapy, the study found that 9.5% regressed 24 months later. All patients who did not have a stem cell transplant were recovered at that time.

Findings – Journal of Clinical Oncology – suggested that stem cell transplantation offers long-term benefits for young patients receiving CAR T cell therapy, according to researchers at the University of Virginia.

“CAR is more than 50% of children in other studies with another bounce, as most lose the goal that CAR pursues,” said Dr. Daniel Lee, a pediatric oncologist and director of Pediatric Stem Cell Transplant and Immunotherapy at UVA. Charlottesville Children’s Hospital.

“Most of these children take a single shot at this therapy to save lives called CAR single T cells and change paradigms. We should do everything we can to maximize healing, and right now it’s a transplant after a CAR transplant. Most of them,” Lee added. .

He noted that many parents turn to CAR T cells in order to avoid stem cell transplantation.

“But,” he added, “there is a possibility that a window after transplanting cars will cure these incurable children more; our research shows that.”
