Del Potro hits before Buenos Aires’ return

By Alberto Amalfi | Friday 4 February 2022

Days before his scheduled return, Juan Martin del Potro finds his groove hitting the midfield in Buenos Aires.

The 2009 U.S. Open champion wore no braces on his surgically repaired knee, although he wore black kinesiology tape over his right knee disc while working through a full workout.

Federer: I will know by April if return is feasible

The tower of Tandil’s long-awaited return sent a buzz building around Buenos Aires.

Del Potro will play his first ATP match since 2019 in front of home fans at next week’s Argentina Open on the red clay of Buenos Aires.

“How nice it will be to see them,” the man who Argentine fans call Humble Warrior posted on Instagram.

The 33-year-old del Potro underwent four knee surgeries and several setbacks in his quest to return to the pro circuit. Del Potro has not played since with a broken patella that forced him to retire from Queen’s Club on June 17, 2019.

More recently, Argentine media reported del Potro suffered multi-million dollar losses due to financial decisions allegedly made by his beloved father, the late Daniel del Potro.

Del Potro struck with Diego Schwartzman, the 2021 Buenos Aires champion. Del Potro’s former Davis Cup team-mate, david nalbandian, is also on the premises. Nalbandian was busy in court with Miomir Kecmanovic.

Nalbandian also has time with Fabio Fognini at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club in a reunion of two of tennis’ true creative forces.
