Fight Island is here, four cards officially announced for July – MMA Latest News

It has been the biggest unknown during these uncertain times for combat sports, but with the UFC finally back on its feet – Fight Island is finally a go.

The operation was kept a secret for quite sometime ever since Dana White threw out the concept of it a few months ago, but with the UFC successfully cracking down on a recipe to hold safe events, the long awaited confirmation of the island’s whereabouts has finally followed suit.

White went on ESPN’s First Take to officially announce that the location of the island is the Yas Island in Abu Dhabi and the UFC boss also confirmed that the company is set to host four events in two weeks there during the month of July.

The dates include one PPV event, UFC 251, on July 11, and three subsequent fight nights on July 15, 18 and 25.

White also went on to announce some of the fights that have been signed and sealed for the pay-per-view event set to kick things off on the island.

The headliner for the event will be a Welterweight showdown between reigning champion Kamaru Usman and surging contender Gilbert Burns. “Durinho” has been campaigning for a title shot for quite some time and his dominant victory over former champion Tyron Woodley last week finally did the trick. Usman will welcome the Brazilian to the big time with his second title defense, following up on an impressive stoppage of Colby Covington back in December.

In the co-main, Alexander Volkanovski will defend his 145-pound belt for the first time against the very man he took it from. Max Holloway’s divisional reign was nothing short of legendary before Volkanovski came along and spoiled the party and in spite of some fans not being quite on board with “Blessed” getting an immediate rematch, the general consensus is that it is well deserved.

Last but not least, rounding off the triple threat of title fights, the fate of the vacant Bantamweight belt will also be decided on the island as the divisions rising star in Petr Yan is set to take on Jose Aldo. It is another slightly controversial but highly anticipated matchup. Jose Aldo is of course coming off a loss to face one of the divisions most dangerous contenders. The Bantamweight division though is in the best shape it has been in a while and even though some fans may not agree with Aldo getting the shot at the belt, whoever wins on July 11 is sure to have their hands full in that talent packed division.
