Raymond Ford retained his World Boxing Association (WBA) Continental Americas Featherweight title by defeating Edward Vázquez by a split decision this Saturday night at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona.
It was not an easy battle for the champion, who had to fight for 10 rounds with Vázquez to get cards of 98-92, 97-93 and 94-96 and thus took another big step in his young career.
Ford found himself with an aggressive competitor who was determined to take the crown from him. He had to use his counter-attack and his speed well to get out of trouble in many rounds and add points to the judges’ scorecards.
The laps were very close. Vázquez attacked well and received good blows, but it was not enough against the skills of the regional champion of the pioneer organization.
The 22-year-old made the second defense of the belt and improved his unbeaten record to 11 wins, 1 draw and 6 KOs. In turn, Vázquez now has a record of 11 wins, 1 loss and 3 KOs.
