Gary Russell Jr. vs. Mark Magsayo: Fight prediction, map, chance, start time, how to watch, Showtime Boxing

Gary Russell Jr. will return to the ring and defend his WBC featherweight championship when he faces Mark Magsayo in the main event of Showtime Championship Boxing on Saturday night. This is Russell’s first fight in almost two years.

Inactivity has become something of a hallmark of Russell’s career. He has not fought more than once a year since 2014 and was completely kept out of the ring in 2021 when Rey Vargas suffered a bone fracture that forced him out of a planned March battle with Russell.

Hearing Russell tell it, his light schedule is the fault of scared opponents, not a lack of desire to get in the ring.

“The reason I compete once a year is because we do not get a dance partner,” Russell told ESPN. “I’m forced to fight the next best guy rather than a champion. I definitely want to be more active. I know I’m not happy to compete once a year. … There’s no worries about “I’m always in the gym. I’m not taken two months off from exercise since I was about 4 or 5.”

The inactivity also enabled Russell to retain a spot as the longest reigning active champion in boxing, having held his title since March 2015.

While insisting ring rust is not a concern, there was a hiccup for Russell on Friday as he lost weight on his first attempt, which took almost all of the time allowed to get under 126 pounds to eventually reach 125 , 5 to weigh in, who just lost. its “longest ruling” status on the scales.

Attention now goes to Saturday and the fight with Magsayo, who has been moved by the WBC to compulsory status ahead of Vargas. Magsayo is a tough Filipino, who proved his steel in his most recent outing, winning a back-and-forth war with Julio Ceja in which both men were beaten before Magsayo ended the show with a brutal knockout blow.

Magsayo is not an easy outing, but he is not quite at the level of fighter fans and media has insisted Russell in those rare moments he chooses to step into the ring. This is especially true of a competitive featherweight division that includes very good names and action fighters.

Yet, when Russell is in the ring, he seems to be part of an elite fighter, with smooth skills that have enabled him to easily handle his annual mandatory title challenges, most notably a win over Joseph Diaz in 2018.

Russell claims he wants to be more active in the future and also called for fights with Gervonta Davis and Vasiliy Lomachenko, who defeated Russell by a majority decision in a WBO title clash in June 2014.

But first Russell has to deal with cases against Magsayo. Then it will be seen if the 33-year-old pursues those bigger fish and a more active schedule.

Elsewhere on the map, junior welterweights meet in the co-main event when Subriel Matias Petros Ananyan takes on the fight. Matias, the Puerto Rican native, is rolling early in his career with a 17-1 record that includes 17 knockouts. However, that lonely defect came into the hands of Ananyan in February 2020 when the Russians reached a decision. Now Matias gets the chance to avenge his loss and move on at 140 pounds.

On top of that, Tugstsogt Nyambayar is back when he takes on late substitute Sakaria Lukas in a featherweight competition. Nyambayar was originally expected to face Vic Pasillas in this slot, but Pasillas tested positive for COVID-19 earlier in the week and was forced to withdraw. Nyamabayar wants to return to the winning streak after abandoning a decision to Chris Colbert last July for the interim WBA title. It was his second loss in his last three after also abandoning a decision to Russell in February 2020.

Below is the full battle map for Saturday night with the latest chance from Caesars Sportsbook.

Russell vs Magsayo card, chance

Gary Russell Jr. (c) -380

Mark Magsayo +300

WBC featherweight title

Subriel Matias -450

Petros Ananyan +350

Junior welterweight

Tugstsogt Nyambayar -450

Sakaria Lukas +350

Featherweight

Forecast

The odds here are a little closer than you would expect for a fight like this, probably because of Russell who has been out of the ring since February 2020. Skill for skill, Russell is hands down the better fighter. Magsayo was in serious trouble against Ceja and two fights before it provoked a divided decision over Rigoberto Hermosillo. Ceja and Hermosillo are not exactly at Russell’s level, which is not a good sign for Magsayo. It’s likely to play out as the kind of battle where Russell can simply box out a Magsayo game and work out to go to another of his annual title defenses. Select: Gary Russell Jr. via UD
