Hope – nick does hockey

My mother’s middle name is Hope. That was my Nan’s doing. She told me many times that she had given it to Mom, because, “If nothing else, she will always have hope.”

As The Beatles never sang: All you need is hope.

I am currently doing a big cleaning out of endless boxes of memorabilia and sometimes rubbish at my office and on Friday I got a Tattslotto ticket. Well, actually it was the master card you hand over every week so you can play the same numbers. I do not know what the technical name for it is; I gave up on Tattslotto a long time ago, working on my old math teacher’s theory that lotto is just a gambling tax for people who do not understand probability factors.

But here, in a box of old newspaper articles I wrote, souvenirs of overseas trips, photos, letters from when people wrote letters, and other stuff, was a ticket for two ‘games’ figures.

And it came to my mind: imagine if I played those numbers this week AND THEY WIN. It would be a story of fate and chance for centuries.

And then, of course, it comes to my mind: imagine if I, after thinking about it, now do NOT play those numbers AND THEY WIN. What if I had to spend the rest of my miserable life knowing that I had turned my back on this random, glorious, romantic chance to be a multi-millionaire and so fate shot right and right at my face while I back was twisted, which is not physically possible but can be symbolic.

After work, I went to the lottery counter, like one of those obscure non-gamblers at the TAB on Melbourne Cup Day, and tried to work out how to place a two-dollar bet.

Michael 'Disco' Roach (# 8) scored his biggest point ever, with Kevin 'Hungry' Bartlett (# 29) wandering the group. Once Tiger champions, now Lotto numbers.

It took a while before I even worked out the tickets I had were not some crazy-expensive System Nines, but cheaper System Eights. I looked at the numbers and tried to remember when I got to them and why. One is definitely a collection of my favorite guernsey numbers at Richmond: Jack Dyer / Maurice Rioli’s 17, Richo’s 12, Disco Roach / Jack Riewoldt’s number 8. The other game looks like it’s birthdays…

I shrugged and handed over money. I bought the tickets for Saturday night’s draw and dreamed of millions.

And my long passing Nan smiles in my imagination, eyes twinkle. America seems to be Trump-screwed, Australia’s politicians remain heartless bastards without a plan. People around me struggle with illness and despair. But Nan’s ghost lingers. If nothing else, you always have hope.

Unfortunately, as far as IHV competition, summer season Div 3, is concerned for me, the hope is dashed. My team, the Cherokees, are finishing a sad end to this season, after somehow tumbling the points ladder while looming the finals. The Detroit Red Wings also staggered and will eventually lose them quarter century playoff series. The Wings ‘unofficial national anthem is’Do not stop believing‘but they have already sold a young player that I have always liked so much that I bought what is probably the only Tomas Jurco Wings jersey in the Southern Hemisphere. He’s now a Blackhawk and would have jumped out of town, after sketching playing time and bad use in Motorcity, with much hope in his heart, that he can finally flourish in Chicago.

So long, Jurco. Have a great career (but not too big: you're a Blackhawk now)

All that is left is for the mighty Tigers to march into the 2017 AFL season, their coach says nothing less than finals will do, and the players talk endlessly about the new spirit and purpose that can be found at Punt Road. What could possibly, possibly go wrong? Last season, it took about three weeks for any hope of dying as the team got stuck at the gate. This season? Of course I live in hope, endless hope. Richmond supporters are the Hall of Fame fans of irrational and against all evidence of never giving up hope.

The NHL trade deadline is over in a few days and I expect several other favorite Wings to be sent out of town as Detroit becomes a seller. The Cherokees have one more game, next weekend, before we go our own ways until spring, and I know from every year I have played that players will aim for winter competition, or retire, or go back to feet, or not there do not be next year for whatever reason. I really loved this year’s Cherokee series, started with a lot of hope, which was gradually shattered, and still wish we had more success.

But hey, I got an email from Richmond FC last week saying that my membership package is on its way. Then the Tigers won Friday night and looked decent. February preseason form: this is the best.

Sunday, after the ‘Kees lost 6-0 against a very smooth and even Wolverines series, after my best goal shot hit a few legs, the goalkeeper beat five-hole, but then stopped before I crossed the line, after stepping out of Icy O’Briens, I suddenly remembered that I had to check my Tattslotto ticket.

In one game, I had exactly one number, not the required six. The other game was worse: a lone complementary number.

No miracle. No magic. No millions.

Thank you for nothing, Fate, you unromantic hybrid.

And in two days it’s March. Go Tiges.
