Another week in the AMA Supercross 2022 season last week in San Diego yielded another new trio at the top of the points ladder for the 450s. The 250s are much more consistent as Christian Craig and Hunter Lawrence finished among the top three each week. Now, Round 4 returns to Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California for Anaheim 2. AMA Supercross Round 4 – Anaheim 2 Preview
The first race of the season was at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, and it was a cruel one. With the lead in his 250SX heat, Colt Nichols devastated on the frenzy, breaking both his arms, in addition to burns that ended his season. Nichols was one of the favorites to win the West at the time after winning the East 250SX crown in 2021.
It’s not the exact track that was run in Round 1, but there are enough similarities to keep an eye on the top end players of the season’s opening to repeat their performances. As it stands now, the 450SX is anyone to take. Ken Roczen took Anaheim for the first time, followed by Cooper Webb and Justin Barcia. Only Barcia have since finished another top-three and finished third in Round 2 in Oakland. Only six points separate Eli Tomac in first place (59 points) and Roczen in eighth place (52 points). Roczen was quickly won earlier this month with seven seconds and 15 seconds ahead of fourth place. Roczen, the runner-up last season, will try to recover his recent performances with some familiarity.
The 250SX is another story where Craig wants to dominate again and already owns 73 points. Through the first two rounds, the top three were composed of Craig, Lawrence and Seth Hammaker, with Craig winning the first two. Hammaker missed San Diego with a spleen injury, which disrupted the order of business. Lawrence took another second place finish in San Diego last week to stay close to Craig, while Michael Mosiman moved in to take first place. Craig has an 11-point lead over Mosiman on the points ladder, but another exchange of fortunes could make things interesting. Mosiman will be looking for another upset at Anaheim where he finished in sixth place for the first time.
