Jimmie Johnson, who is currently racing full-time with IndyCar, including his first Indianapolis 500, was recently asked about a possible return to NASCAR, the 46-year-old boldly acknowledging that he is open to doing so.
Johnson has discussed numerous topics, including his race at ‘The 24 Hours of Daytona’ and other potential races he could follow in 2022.
The former HMS driver said he had received offers from NASCAR, SRX and off-road driving. However, when Gluck asked if the driver had moved past his NASCAR rendezvous, his answer was pretty simple.
My conversation with @JimmieJohnson
about this weekend’s Rolex 24, his first full-time year at IndyCar, how he’s adapting to chase an Indy car on oval, whether he has any interest in returning to NASCAR, and more. https://t.co/oLFZUE9y2d– Jordan Bianchi (@Jordan_Bianchi) 28 January 2022
“No, I’m open to that. I would love to go back. But with this full-time IndyCar, full-time endurance sports car schedule, I just do not see how, ” Johnson admits. He also admitted that he missed NASCAR and its fans the most.
In 12 races, Johnson reached five top-20 finishes, including the season opener in Alabama. However, his performance gradually improved, as evidenced by his results in the season’s last four races when he finished in the top 20 each time, including a draw for his season-best finish of 17th in the last two races at Laguna Seca and Long Beach.
