Jake Paul is very much open to the idea of an MMA bout with UFC great and newly minted fight promoter Khabib Nurmagomedov. However, the one-time lightweight champion and his Eagle FC promotion would need to pony up close to $ 40 million to make such a fight a reality.
There has been a great deal of speculation surrounding the possibility of YouTuber-turned-pugilist Paul making his way into an MMA cage. There were rumblings about preliminary negotiations with the PFL, he recently showcased his first foray into practicing kicks on social media, and Eagle FC boss Nurmagomedov has suggested a contract was even offered to the “Problem Child.” However, it does not seem like that transition to MMA is actually happening anytime soon.
Jake Paul down to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov in MMA… for $ 35 million
“I would need to practice my kicks and a little more on the jiu-jitsu side for like two years, maybe two and a half years before I would [compete in the cage]”Paul said during a guest spot on popular MMA podcast The MMA Hour.
Yet, despite his fight game awareness that he is far from ready for a cage fight with serious talent, the door is still slightly ajar for him to make the move earlier if the price is right, and is at least eight figures.
“Khabib said, ‘We offered him a deal.’ It’s not true. They never offered me anything. Eagle FC has never even done an event. Not to hate on anything they’re doing but I would need more than what I make in boxing to risk going into MMA right now, ”said Paul. … “People would have to come [with] $ 25, $ 35 million dollars to just start the conversation with me. ”
Despite the high unlikeliness of that price being met, the 24-year-old says if Eagle FC were able to offer a contract for that type of money, he would not need any warm-up fights first. He would want to go straight to the top and pull the “Eagle” out of retirement for a mainstream dream fight of Paul vs Nurmagomedov in the cage.
“I would fight Khabib in MMA if they wanted to make that offer. Cause that would be exciting. That would excite me, especially if I had more time to train. That would be a massive fight, ”he said. “Probably a million, two million pay-per-view buys and all I would have to do is work on my wrestling skills. Cause I could outstrike him standing up. ”
Paul moved his record to 5-0 in boxing after knocking out former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley in the pairs Dec. rematch. No date is set yet for his return.
