Jermall Charlo gets rid of robbery charges, case dismissed

Jermall Charlo has been acquitted of all charges stemming from an alleged robbery incident.

BoxingScene.com confirmed that the three-charge case against the undefeated two-division and reigning WBC middleweight title list was dismissed Monday, citing insufficient evidence to drop all charges. Houston’s Charlo was previously arrested on August 7 and charged with three counts of second-degree felony in response to a complaint filed July 16 at Privat Martini Bar & Social Club in San Antonio.

Charlo was released on $ 5,000 bail and retained his innocence, eager to prove it in a court of law. That never happened, as investigators determined that video surveillance confirmed Charlo’s insistence that the incident in question was merely a misunderstanding about his debit card, which was originally denied due to a fraud alert — a common occurrence experienced by Chase cardholders.

The evidence supported Charlo’s version of events, which concluded the case entirely according to Bexar County court records.

According to the initial incident report, Charlo allegedly stole cash from a guest check portfolio and accused a waiter of trying to steal his debit card while retrieving his driver’s license from another portfolio. The report indicates that a member of Charlo’s party injured a waitress when he left the institution, although there have already been clashes over both the sequence of events and the extent of the incident in question.

“I want to make it clear that Jermall did not steal any money from anyone at the club and did not make any threats against anyone,” said Kent A. Schaffer, Charlo’s lawyer at the time. “When (the club) used his card, it was refused and he then received a fraud warning from Chase Bank asking if he had made the complaint. He answered yes and they told him to file the complaint again.

“The waitress went to drive it again and came back and said she could not get the card. Jermall was upset that his card was missing, as it was a debit card linked to an account with a significant amount of money. “

The incident report submitted was where the two parties differed on what happened next. Charlo — who was in town in support of his twin brother Jermell Charlo in his undisputed junior middleweight championship clash with Brian Castano — was understandably upset about the company failing to locate his debit card. By that time, he had seen his license stick out at a check provider where he had taken it back, as “he did not want her to lose it either”, according to his lawyer.

According to the report, the police responded to a call from the company around 02:00. Officials believed there was enough evidence to proceed with the case, with arrest warrants executed on Aug. 7, according to Bexar County court records. The feeling of Charlo’s legal team that it would be resolved, which eventually proved to be the case.

Charlo (32-0, 22KOs) is out of the game since a twelve-round, unanimous decision victory over Mexico’s Juan Macias Montiel last June tenth at Toyota Center in his Houston hometown. The victory was the fourth successful title defense for Charlo since his reign was upgraded in June 2019 from “interim” to “World Champion”.

The next fight for Charlo has yet to be announced by Premier Boxing Champions (PBC). However, his name remained in headlines as the leading candidate to face the next pound-for-pound king and undisputed super-middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (57-1-2, 39KOs).

The rumored fight is aimed at a May 7 Pay-Per-View in Las Vegas, in celebration of Cinco De Mayo and with Charlo gaining weight in an effort to become a three-division title list. Such conversations come as his twin brother Jermell waits on a set battle date for his undisputed junior middleweight championship reunion with Castano.
