Kirk Cousins’ future in press must depend on Rodgers

Green Bay Packers ‘Aaron Rodgers talks to Minnesota Vikings’ Kirk Cousins after an NFL football game Sunday, September 15, 2019, in Green Bay, Wis. (MIKE ROEMER – ASSOCIATES PRES FILE)

Once again in Minnesota, a Vikings full-back’s future is uncertain.

Kirk Cousins’ performance over the past few seasons has divided the fan base. Half believe he is a gifted passerby when he has the tools to be successful, with championship potential. The other more vocal half believes he robbed the Vikings of millions of dollars while providing little in return.

Like most nuanced issues, the correct answer is somewhere in the middle. Although he has not shown the ability to overcome disasters similar to Mahomes or Allen, he is not completely incompetent like Baker Mayfield in 2021. What should the Vikings do with a $ 445 million limit at hand?

I believe the answer should depend on what happens to Aaron Rodgers.

Aaron Rodgers and Kirk Cousins

Contrary to the beliefs of people and organizations such as SKOR Noord, Cousins is not a bad QB. Although he does have disadvantages such as mobility and pocket presence, one can count on both hands on the number of passes he only missed last season. Accuracy is his greatest strength. That accuracy is only challenged when confronted with inadequate fit protection.

The Vikings attack was 27th in the league in terms of pass protection. Let me now face the audience with a rhetorical question: What is easier, to find a solid right guard and center? Or to dig up the next Patrick Mahomes or Josh Allen?

If your answer is a new quarterback, do you think like Phil Mackey.

However, one can make a successful argument that Kirk takes up too much cap space and thus does not allow the Vikings to build a solid team around him.

There are three solutions to this problem. 1. Concept better. If a team needs free agency to solve all its problems, you’re weak with the setup and you need a new GM, which the Vikings did. 2. The next solution is to trade Cousins and start a total rebuild with your compensation. The Vikings should trade nothing but a first-round pick while eating from that salary cap. However, trading Kirk only makes sense if you believe there is a better replacement. No one knows if Kellen Mond is ready to climb to that spot. Maybe we would understand if Zimmer did not start Mannion just out of disgust with Rick Spielman. 3. Furthermore, your third option is to draft a new quarterback. This is not a quarterback draft class of note. There may be a diamond in the rough, but the chances of that are incredibly slim. So, what should the Vikings do?

When Rodgers is gone, the section is wide open. Trading the best quarterback in the NFC North for a rebuild during a time when you are the best team would be foolish, to say the least. It just gives opponents a better shot.

The Vikings’ biggest weakness last year was defense, clock management and attacking play. With a new attacking coordinator and head coach, I would expect game call and time management to improve. With that said, when Rodgers returns to Green Bay, things get a lot harder. With Rodgers back, I would recommend starting a complete rebuild and preparing for an NFC North without him.

My mind can be boiled down to this, with a wide open NFC North I find it counterproductive to finally start a rebuild. Plus, if the Vikings can rebuild their trenches like the 49ers, they could still be a serious contender.
