London Lions held off a spirited second half comeback from Manchester Giants to progress to the semi-finals of the BBL Trophy on Sunday, with Cheshire Phoenix and Plymouth City Patriots picking up big wins in the Championship.

After an incredible first half showing, the Lions were pegged back by the BBL Cup finalists, as Cheshire edged a thriller over Glasgow Rocks and the Patriots picked up a convincing home win over Surrey Scorchers.

After last week’s BBL Cup heartbreak, the Giants will have been looking to make the next step in today’s Trophy tie, however, came up against an inspired Lions offense in the first half. Led by the mightily impressive pair of Dirk Williams and Isaiah Reese, London raced out into a 27-point lead.

The Giants found their footing in the second half and managed to slow the Lions attack whilst eating into what was a sizeable lead, however ultimately left themselves with too much to do in the second half.

Williams led all scorers with 28 points to go with six rebounds and four assists, whilst Tyrik Armstrong put in another impressive showing for the Giants with 20 points and eight assists.

In the day’s Championship action Cheshire Phoenix knew a win over the Rocks would take them level on points in third place, yet were made to work extremely hard for the win in an epic afternoon battle with Glasgow.

Glasgow started the game the stronger of the two sides and found their rhythm quickly after a 32-point first quarter. The Phoenix ended the half and started the second strongly however, and began to peg the Rocks back with impressive contributions from Levi Bradley and Namon Wright.

Jaycee Hillsman continued to claw the Rocks back into the game as he shot 6-8 from the field, however missed two crucial free throws at the end of the game when he had the opportunity to tie the contest.

Bradley finished the game with 28 points on an incredible 12-16 shooting, while Jordan Harris led the Rocks with 26 points of his own.

Sunday’s action tipped off at the Plymouth Pavilions, with the Patriots finding their footing in recent weeks winning two out of their last three prior to the afternoon’s game. They came up against a Surrey Scorchers side who were still rooted to the bottom of the table, and seeking their second win of the season.

Both sides enjoyed their share of the lead in the early exchanges before Plymouth hit their rhythm in the closing stages of the half, largely thanks to Joe Hart’s excellent three-point shooting.

A tight third period saw Surrey close the gap to the Patriots, however some excellent Plymouth defense in the final stages rounded up another win for a side who are closing the gap to the Playoff spaces above them.

Hart finished with 25 points, shooting 5-6 from three-point range, whilst Lemar Hamrick played all 40 minutes for the Scorchers on his way to racking up 16 points.
