Medvedev History Breaker and Maker

Daniel Medwedef can play big heartbreaker for the second consecutive Slam and retire as a record player in Sunday’s Australian Open final.

Medvedev, who fell to Nadal in a thrilling five-set final at the 2019 US Open, said he was too focused on winning his first AO title to worry about Nadal’s pursuit of an iconic record.

“I’m going to be honest, it’s not me [have any impact], “said Medvedev.” It’s not me who’s going for the 21st, not me trying to break those records. I’m going for my second one. I’m still far from all this. I might be able to compete with other guys who have won, but I will not even name them all, I do not know who might have two or one.

“So I’m just trying, you know, focusing on myself, doing my job. Of course, you know, I’m not lying, I know what’s going on, I know what Rafa’s going for, I knew what Novak was. I’m not going to say, Oh, “Yes, I’m trying not to listen to this. But it’s kind of their thing, not mine. I’m just there trying to win the final.”

The 35-year-old Nadal beat Medvedev three of their four meetings, but the Russians won their most recent match at the 2020 ATP final in London.

History is within the reach of the 25-year-old Russian: if Medvedev takes the title, he will be the first man in the history of the Open era to win a second Grand Slam championship at the next event after winning his first major has.

“But it gave me a lot of confidence in my own strength, in my own tennis, that I now know that I am capable of winning seven games in a row and the last one against Novak was epic,” said Medvedev. “So I knew before this tournament it was possible. This is what I have been trying to prove so far. Once again I am very happy that I have the chance for the title on Sunday.”
