The dance background of Sonny Kiss helped prepare him for a life as a professional wrestler.
All Elite Wrestling‘s Sonny Kiss recently sat down with Alex Biese of Asbury Park Press to talk about a variety of subjects. While discussing Kiss’ dancing background, Sonny said he believes it’s a lot closer to professional wrestling than people realize.
“We’re athletes, we’re artists, we’re actors,” Kiss said. “(Wrestling) is honestly like choreography, you learn when to do what. It’s like you’re putting on a play but in a very intense, aggressive nature. … I was able to apply my dance background with the flexibility and the athleticism and the art and all that stuff and basically just be me. Because with dancing it was like I really got to express myself, so now I’m expressing myself as a character coming from that dance background. ”
Sonny Kiss also confirmed the character he plays on AEW Dynamite is “very much like” how he is in real life, noting that there’s an authenticity to what fans see on television. Kiss also spoke about authenticity coming in the form of representation and inclusion, explaining that AEW and other companies allowing performers to be themselves will help fans connect with them and continue breaking down barriers that still exist in some circles.
“They just need to continue to let LGBTQ talent and Black talent and everybody just be themselves and let that authenticity shine through… because (audiences) can relate to all of us in a lot of different kinds of ways,” Kiss said, before mentioning Anthony Bowens and Leyla Hirsch as some of the other performers that get to be themselves on TV. “Allowing me to be just to be the gender-fluid person that I am and allowing Bowens to be him and Layla to be herself, I feel like it will continue to just help the world in the future if we were literally just seen more… and continue to be in dialogue with the fans. ”
