New Giants GM Joe Schoen backs Daniel Jones in introductory press conference, says he wants to build around QB

The New York Giants introduced former Buffalo Bills assistant GM Joe Schoen as their new general manager on Wednesday, and a question everyone had on their minds was about his thoughts on quarterback Daniel Jones.

The Duke product has gone 12-25 as the starter since being selected by New York with the No. 6 overall pick in 2019, and has not been able to definitively establish himself as the franchise quarterback due to injuries and inconsistencies. With new additions to the front office and a new coaching staff on the way, it was fair to ask the new lead man if he thinks Jones is the future, or if he’s on his way out. Schoen’s response indicated the former.

“We’ll build an offense to accentuate what Daniel does best,” Schoen said, via NFL Media.

It sounds like one of Schoen’s early goals this offseason is to identify offensive pieces that will help Jones reach his ceiling as New York’s signal-caller, and that will likely include both weapons as well as protectors.

Jones saw his 2021 campaign ended prematurely due to a neck injury. In 11 games played, he threw for 2,428 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Jones also completed a career-high 64.3 percent of his passes. While he had his fair share of poor performances, Jones has not had the best support around him. He’s seen coaching changes, coordinator changes and injuries at virtually every position. That’s why Giants co-owner John Mara says his quarterback can’t be fairly evaluated just yet.

“We do feel Daniel can play,” Mara said, via NFL Media. “We’ve done everything possible to screw this kid up.”
