ON THE SIDELINES

IU Hall of Famer, All-American, Big Ten MVP and Indiana native Mike Woodson is the first Hoosier graduate to lead the program at the start of the season since Lou Watson in 1965. Woodson brings nine years of NBA head coaching experience (Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks) back to his alma mater and worked for seven franchises as an assistant coach and won an NBA title in 2004 with the Detroit Pistons. He played 11 seasons in the NBA as a player and is the fifth all-time leading scorer in program history with 2,061 points.

Northwestern coach Chris Collins is in his ninth year in Evanston.

DEFENSE LEADS THE HOOSIERS

IU is first in the Big Ten and seventh in country in field goal percentage defense (37.7%). The Hoosiers also lead the league in scoring defense (63.5) overall and in conference play (64.7). IU is second in the league in blocked shots per game (5.5).

ALL-AMERICAN TRAYCE JACKSON-DAVIS

Junior / sophomore forward Trayce Jackson-Davis is living up to his preseason accolades averaging 17.7 points (7th in B1G), 8.4 rebounds (3rd), shooting 59.1% from the floor (4th) and contributing 57 blocked shots (1st).

He set a Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall record by scoring 43 points against Marshall, breaking the previous mark (42) set by Steve Alford against Michigan State.

He has had eight double-doubles this season and 30 in his career with IU posting a 23-7 record in those games. He notched four straight double-doubles for the first time in his career after he had 23 points and 12 boards at Nebraska.

Jackson-Davis now has scored 1,340 points as a Hoosier, rating 28th all-time in IU lore.

Despite being limited to 11 minutes due to foul trouble against No. 4/4 Purdue, he defended a game-winning shot attempt ad made two free throws with 5.1 seconds left to extend the IU lead. He has averaged 17.7 points and 10.0 rebounds in his career against Northwestern.

ODDS AND TRENDS

IU’s starting lineup of Jackson-Davis (81), Sr./Jr’s. Xavier Johnson (103), Miller Kopp (96), Parker Stewart (95) and Race Thompson (49) have combined for 419 career Division I starts. Off the bench, Sr./Jr’s. Michael Durr (85) and Rob Phinisee (69) have started 154 games.

KOPP RETURNS TO NORTHWESTERN

Kopp returns to Welsh-Ryan Arena where he played three seasons for the Wildcats from 2018-21. He averaged 9.6 points in 87 career games. He averaged 13.1 points as a sophomore and 10.3 points as a junior. He shot 36.0% from long range for Northwestern.

IT’S RACE, NOT TRAYCE

Thompson has led the Hoosiers in scoring in each of the last three games and is ranked 10th in the Big Ten in rebounding (7.6). In the three-game stretch, he is averaging 16.3 points and 8.0 rebounds, while shooting 51.4% from the floor, 57.1% from the 3-point range and 75.0% from the line with four blocked shots.

He had a season-high 18 points against Penn State and Maryland and added his fourth double-double of the season when he added 12 boards against the Terrapins. He is second on the team averaging 11.5 points, 7.6 rebounds and shooting 54.6% from the field with 17 blocked shots.
