Serbia is through to the Davis Cup semifinals after a 2-1 return over Kazakhstan on Wednesday.
Mikhail Kukushkin collected the opening point for Kazakhstan and beat Miomir Kecmanovic 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (11) after saving four match points. The match lasted three hours and 18 minutes.
Novak Djokovic, world number 1, kept Serbia’s hopes for a semi-final in the second match of the day alive as he drove past Alexander Bublik 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 16 minutes.
Novak broke in the fourth game to clinch the opening set. The second set followed a similar pattern with Djokovic getting another break, this time in the third game. The Serbian bait, which led his team to the Davis Cup title in 2010, won 91% of the points on its first discount (29/32).
Match statistics: ace (4-12), double errors (3-7), winners (11-4), unforced errors (9-15), total points won (72-54).
In the deciding doubles match, Novak Djokovic and Nikola Cacic teamed up to beat Andrey Golubev and Aleksandr Nedovyesov 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
“I am proud of the fighting spirit. We fell off in the second set, but we managed to bounce back and hold our nerves. The start of the third set was crucial. I am proud of Nikola and proud of this team, ” Novak said in court.
Serbia will face Croatia in Friday’s semi-final at the Madrid Arena (16:00 CET).
