As of today, Facebook slash Meta has taken another step to throw away its baggage of yesteryear and completely renegotiate itself into a Metaverse first company. Although Facebook is now officially called Meta, and it’s been for a few months, we’ve been waiting to see what the company would do with its Oculus brand of Virtual Reality (VR) headsets, and now we have the answer: all upcoming VR products will come with the new brand of Meta Quest.
The company announced the change in a tweet that read: “New name. Same mission.” The Twitter account that created the tweet, @oculus, no longer exists, and has been transferred to @metaquestvr, as noted by XDA Developers. The virtual reality section of Meta will also be known as Meta Quest, so so far the only part of Oculus that remains are heads that have not been sold. It’s safe to assume once that stock is liquidated, all new Quest headers will get the new brand. This is clearly just a name change, so it’s not an indication of any actual hardware or roadmap changes for the company. It’s just an alignment with the parent company’s name scheme.
It is not surprising that the news of the brand name is not going very well, following the pattern of when the company changed its name to Meta back in October 2021. People did not like the name Meta, and the video the company released to show with the Metaverse was also greeted with widespread ridicule. This time, the finternet was irritated by the trademark, which was documented by Android Central, with the majority of responses on Twitter being rather cruel. What does not help things is the “hey, we’re hip” caption on the redesigned Twitter account that reads: “New handle, who is it?”
Meta took note of the dissatisfied reactions, and answered, “We understand our community will miss the Oculus name, but change does not always have to be a bad thing! We hope to make our ambitions to help build the metavers clearer with our new name! ”
When it was not enough to silence the no-seers, it responded to one person by declare, “We hear you. We all have a strong attachment to the Oculus brand, and it was a very difficult step to make. As we change the brand of the hardware, Oculus will continue to be a core part of our DNA and will continue to thrive in things like software and developer tools. ”
It turns out that despite people’s general dislike of Facebook, the Oculus brand still enjoyed some high prestige as it was separate from Facebook, and people generally agree that the Quest 2 has a very good VR -headset is. Changing its name to Meta Quest 2 or whatever it’s called, robs the company of all the goodwill it’s built up over the years, while transferring everyone’s contempt to a product it really does not deserve. Plus, as several people on Twitter pointed out, Oculus sounds cool and no one likes the Metaverse, so why smear your headset with such a label? In addition, Facebook and Meta have many subsidiaries that will never be renamed, including Instagram, WhatsApp. This has led some to speculate on Twitter what it would sound like if Meta did rebrand these properties, with one Twitter user daring guess Instagram would be changed to Meta Scroll.
