The biggest question

Who is the quarterback? Justin Fields, who passed 63 TDs and nine catches, went on to win the 2021 NFL draft. This leaves the three-way race for quarterback work. Ohio State had this spring question in 2015 with Cardale Jones, JT Barrett and Braxton Miller and again in 2018 with Dwayne Haskins, Joe Burrow and Tate Martell.

Ohio State QB competition

CJ Stroud he saw limited action last year, but showed his talent with a 48-yard TD against Michigan State. It is considered previous, but the competition is tight. The first year of the red shirt Jack Miller III He set a record in Chaparral, Scottsdale, Ariz., And a first-class record Kyle McCord (St. Joseph’s, Philadelphia) is another five-star talent in that position.

Three other things to see

Receivers

LSU has the best bodies it has received in 2019. Alabama won the title in 2020. The Buckeys are the pre-season favorites in that 2021 category. Ohio State is the 1-2 most dynamic combination of Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave. Who will challenge the other delegates? Jameson Williams, Julian Fleming and Jaxon Smith-Njigba were complementary in the offense last season and will feature first-year students Emeka Egbuka, Marvin Harrison Jr. and Jayden Ballard in the mix.

Offensive line

All Americans Wyatt Davis and Josh Myers went to the NFL, and the Buckeys have to rework the inside of what should have been another tough offensive line. The Buckeyes ran an average of 256.9 yards in the game, which makes the elite pass attack much more effective. Matthew Jones went to midfield, and Paris Johnson to guard. It looks like the good news is set with starting riders Thayer Munford and Nicholas Petit-Frere. Keep an eye out to see if the other one stands out. Donovan Jackson may be a new student to that player.

Seven back

When the Buckeys lost 52-24 to Alabama they fell out of the College Football Playoff tournament game last season, and the back seven will have to regroup. Senior Dallas Gant and Teradja Mitchell will take on more significant roles in the linebacker, and sophomore Cody Simon is in the mix. Sevyn Banks enters the role of the top corner, but the Buckeys still have secondary doubts. We won’t learn too much about the spring game, but it will provide tips on finding out who the leader is in the fall.

First graders to watch

Offense: TreVeyon Henderson, RB

Henderson should be eager to return to the field again. The five-star, who returned from Hopewell, Virginia, had no high school season in 2020, and would have to take him to the backfield with masters Teague and Steele Chambers. It’s another talented piece to work with on Henderson Day, so it’ll be interesting to see what use it will have as a new student.

Defense: Jack Sawyer, DE

Saywer, 6-5, 248 pounds End of defense at Pickerington North, he signed up to resign from the senior season. He committed to Ohio State after his second season, and will likely step into the protective role behind Zach Harrison and Tyreke Smith, and only improve with defensive line coach Larry Johnson.
