Reasons to visit Mauritius – in photos

Not more than a little speck in the vast Indian Ocean, Mauritius (map) is a tropical island that’s perhaps most famous as an upscale honeymoon and beach destination. Its coastline, characterized by stunning lagoons, pristine sandy beaches and crystal-clear turquoise water, is the main attraction for many, but take a closer look and you’ll find a fascinating island with ancient volcanic peaks, diverse and colorful cultures, bustling markets and warm, welcoming people. I’ve had the privilege of visiting Mauritius several times and though I’ve seen many parts of the island, there’s still a lot more to explore. Here are my impressions of Mauritius in 30 photos, which I hope will inspire you to visit Mauritius one day.

Seeing Mauritius from the air is an incredible experience. The vast lagoons with its blinding white beaches and turquoise water is just spectacular!

Countryside, nature, heritage and towns

It’s hard but if you can tear yourself away from the beach to explore the hinterland, you’ll find lofty peaks, colorful communities, bustling markets, beautiful heritage buildings and lush, verdant landscapes.

Mauritius is, as you can see, a beautiful and safe country to visit. The roads are good, making it easy to explore the island with a rental car. The friendly people speak English and French, and are always eager to help should you lose your way.

Air Mauritius flies from London, Paris, Johannesburg and various Asian cities to Mauritius. Other airlines such as Emirates, BA and Air France also fly to Mauritius.
