Robson Conceicao let it sit for four months, knowing he had a chance to do something about it. The 2016 Brazilian Olympic gold medalist wanted to wipe out his lone pro loss against WBC junior lightweight title list Oscar Valdez in September 2021, and he had the perfect foil in front of him on Saturday night in unbeaten 24-year-old Xavier Martinez.

Conceicao (17-1, 8 knockouts) changed that by dominating Martinez in a unanimous 109-round decision on ESPN from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in a WBC title eliminator.

Judges Henry Ellick (99-91), Henry Gueary (100-90) and David Sutherland (98-92) all saw it easily for Conceicao.

“I had to train extra hard because I knew what challenge he would pose to me tonight,” Conceicao said. “More importantly, I was able to be dominant tonight because I put in so much hard work because I was motivated. I know I have to be the champion. I know I beat Oscar Valdez. He’s got a fight against Shakur Stevenson, and I think Shakur is going to win. But as a fan and a fighter, I want Oscar to win because he owes me a fight.

“I learned a lot from that Oscar Valdez loss, and that’s why I was able to dedicate myself. I was not discouraged by what happened that night. I know who I am, and I knew if I put in the work, I could have this type of action. But my mind is set on Valdez, and I definitely want that shot.

“To be honest, I think Xavier Martinez hits harder than Oscar Valdez. I felt his pack beats, but I know this is the type of fight I needed to prepare myself for because I’m a world champion level fighter. And I definitely want Oscar Valdez. ”

When he entered the fight, Martinez (17-1, 11 KOs) was named no. 9 rated by The Ring. He simply could not Conceicao, who was nominated by The Ring as no. 10 rated, do not keep away.

“I thought it was closer,” Martinez said. “I know I did not do enough to win. I sat back too much. I did not fully listen to the game plan. It is what it is. I’m not going to be a hurt loser. He did his thing tonight. It was not my night. I’m not done. That’s just the beginning.

“I know I hurt him twice. I did not fully listen to my corner. I will keep my head high and keep going. ”

In the first round, Conceicao, behind a high guard, tried to attack the body with the stab, while Martinez patiently pecked through Conceicao’s defensive pillars, looking for an opening. In the last 30 seconds, Martinez landed a few body blows on Conceicao against the ropes.

Conceicao (33) started the second aggressively and threw great effort behind his beats. With less than 10 seconds left in the third, Martinez nailed Conceicao with a loosening left hook that caught the Brazilian on the right side of the net, causing Conceicao’s knee to bend and cause him to stumble.

Conceicao came out as the crawler again in the first 30 seconds of the third, and showed no bad effects from Martinez’s left hooker near the end of the third.

Through the first five rounds, Conceicao was the more active fighter, he came forward and first. Martinez sometimes appeared tentative and did not let go of his hands.

Between the sixth and seventh rounds, Martinez’s coach, the esteemed Ray Woods, told him: “You have to go get him, you sit here behind and look at him. You are not working enough. You have to work. Double in behind you and go to work, ”

By the seventh round, those words of wisdom were perhaps too late. Conceicao connected to the body and kept the fight at his distance and pace.

After seven, Conceicao received 91/410 total beats (22%) to Martinez’s 89/405 (22%), even though it was Conceicao’s consistency that made the difference.

In the co-function, junior welterweight Giovanni Cabrera (19-0, 7 KOs) made a successful return from a 27-month dismissal to a unanimous decision of eight rounds over Rene Tellez Giron (16-2, 10 KOs ) to win.
