Buffalo Sabers goalkeeper Aaron Dell have a NHL three-game suspension Wednesday for interference with Ottawa Senators forward Drake Batherson during Tuesday’s game. Batherson, a first time NHL All-Star sustained an ankle injury at the play and will consequently miss next week’s celebrations in Las Vegas.

The game took place late in the first period with Ottawa already leading 3-0 in an eventual 5-0 home win. Dell left the shooter behind the net for a teammate with Batherson in the back, and when an unsuspecting Batherson turned the corner, Dell checked him into the boards. Batherson, who has equaled his single-season high (34) in 25 fewer games this year, to be heard has a high ankle sprain and is out long term.

Ottawa coach DJ Smith and his teammates came to his defense after the game, with Smith calling the play “bad” and Tyler Ennis said it was “pretty dirty.” Brady Tkachuk said it “sucks” while Marc Methot describe Dell’s actions as “stupid.”

“I do not like to call out other goalkeepers, but they do not expect to be hit by a goalkeeper. Just like when a goalkeeper comes out to play the shot, you can not hit him,” Ottawa- goalkeeper Matt Murray said after the game. “I just thought it was a dangerous play that turned out to be a very unfortunate outcome.”

This is the first suspension of Dell’s six-year career, 126 games. The 32-year-old will play away matches against the Arizona Coyotes Saturday, the Colorado Flood on Sunday and the Vegas Golden Knights Tuesday while serving it.

Meanwhile, the 23-year-old Batherson can apparently miss “several weeks” while looking after his ankle injury.
