Sam Darnold trading ratings: Panthers banking potential; The jets make the right decision
The Carolina Panthers hit Sam Darnold.
With New York’s short-lived Darnold era officially over, the Jets have sent quarterback Sam Darnold to the Panthers in exchange for the sixth round of 2021, the second round of 2022 and the fourth round of 2022.
The Panthers also reportedly receive Darnold’s fifth-year chance, which means Darnold will have two years to prove to Carol that he is the future boyfriend of Matt Rhule and Co.
The Jets thought they were picking a quarterback with No. 2 in the 2021 NFL Draft, almost consolidating that. The Panthers get the damaged passage because of the high cost.
Here’s how to trade:
Sam Darnold trading grades
This trade Panther believes depends on what Darnold can accomplish: a second-round pick, even after a year in the future, is a decent price to pay for a QB that has had billing issues and hasn’t shown the minimum price. consistency since joining the league in 2018.
You’ll be in the fourth round in 2022 and in the sixth this year and you’ll make sense of Carolina really, really he wants to believe that this will work.
This agreement simply consists of a single word: Potential. Darnold, a former No. 3, may still have something on his right arm, but there is a lot of work to be done – especially with billing issues (39 catches in 38 games) for a quarter and he has struggled to stay healthy at times.
The Carolina organization believes they have a good structure to support Darnold, and the reason is: Coach Matt Rhule has already made the franchise stamp, offensive coordinator Joe Brady has done a good job with the limited enduring attack behind Teddy Bridgewater. and the organization has been the most stable and competitive team in the league for a decade.
Carolina probably preferred other anecdotes this season – one was Deshaun Watson of Houston, another was Matthew Stafford – that could have narrowed the potential a bit and made Darnold “worth fixing” for Caroline. Giving Darnold a running game with Christian McCaffrey and reuniting Robby Anderson’s favorite goal can also help ease the burden.
Assuming he was a finalist for the Rhule Jets coaching job before the concert finally went to Adam Gase, Rhule surely believes that there is a lot left in the tank than Darnold has shown.
But then …
Sam Darnold will be in a much better situation in Carolina, but it’s hard to overstate how bad it has been with Jets. His DVOA / DYAR has worsened each successive year.
Last year, Darnold passed only 7.7% of DVOA through a clean pocket. Only Haskins and Smith were worse.

If not Darnold, then who? It looks like Teddy Bridgewater and Carolina are on their way to divorce and Carolina is sitting at No. 8 in the 2021 NFL Draft – and probably getting into the top five in the top three – was a difficult road for the new pass.
While the Panthers are looking for the next franchise guy, they expect Darnold’s “flashes” to be a preview of what’s to come.
Since the Jets hired CEO Joe Douglas from the second, he began marking the clock during Darnold’s tenure.
It’s a story as old as time: GM wants to choose its coach and its coach wants to choose its quarterback. Adam Gase was not Douglas’s boyfriend; and neither did Sam Darnold, who joined the year before Douglas arrived. This year they generally have a chance to take a QB at No. 2 and eventually (maybe? Maybe?) Find an answer in the QB position.
Lack of organizational support, not being the head coach of Gas, poor management of the roster or the type of Darnold Douglas, it was the Darnold era in New York … horrible. It’s hard to ask any quarterback to be successful in that situation, let alone a quarterback who seemed like part of a project out of USC.
Keeping Darnold in Year 4 was never an option in New York – not in 2020 unless he got the ball out and overcame big hurdles. Instead, Darnold backed down and the decision was much easier for Douglas.
Douglas and the Jets were put in a winless state for the 2021 season if they could keep Darnold: If Darnold had a wonderful year, would you make a lot of money? If it’s an average year, where do you go from there?
Douglas cut off Darnold’s finger – a wise organizational move – before answering that question, probably restoring it with an agreement to restore QB status.
The only real blow to the Jets here, if you can even call them, is that the Jets could get it right away. Could the Jets have a better choice in this trade in 2021? Yes. Did they maximize the return of a guy who didn’t respond in New York? As well.
Douglas was able to get the most out of it by getting a player who could show up around the cost of a quarter that didn’t show up. It’s crazy to consider them all and their mother knew that this year the Jets would take a QB – and somehow the Jets got out of the situation on the second lap.
While the report suggested that Darnold could go on to pick in the first round over the course of the season, the Jets were getting another high-profile pick of the future and a quarterback who would be more forward would not be a wizard at all for the Jets GM.
Now, New York, picking No. 2 in the draft, will pick a passer: BYU’s Zach Wilson, Ohio State’s Justin Fields, or North Dakota State’s Trey Spear is there to see. What we do know is that Darnold will not be the guy.
