Terriers host Catamounts; Jersey Rockets d-man commits for 2022 –UPDATED

Terriers will look to continue their strong play since late November (6-0-1; 10-9-3 overall) as they host Vermont (3-14-2) for a weekend series at Agganis Arena. Tonight’s game, a 7 pm start, will be televised on NESN + and streamed on College Sports Live for those outside of New England.

During BU’s current seven-game unbeaten streak, BU has limited opponents to 1.43 goals per game, while killing all 19 power play opportunities during those games. (The PK kill streak overall has reached 22 games). At the same time, the Terriers offensive output has improved, producing 3.86 gpg over the seven games. Both Jay O’Brien and Matt Brown have scored in each of the past three games, after missing multiple games due to injuries. Domenick Fensore (3-15-18) leads BU in scoring and is the conference pace-setter in assists and points by a defenseman.

The Catamounts, who have struggled to create offense, are led by center Philip Lagunov (6-6-12), a graduate transfer who previously skated for UMass’s 2021 national championship team, defenseman Andrew Lucas (2-8-10), left wing Jacques Bouquot (3-6-9) and defenseman Robbie Stucker (3-6-9). Freshman
Gabe Career and senior Tyler Harmon have split the goaltending duties, with each posting a 2.65 GAA in 10 appearances.

Sophomore goalie Drew Commesso, recently named to the roster of the USOlympic hockey team, has been nominated for the Mike Richter Award, which recognizes the top Division 1 netminder. Commesso also was a Richter Award nominee last season.

● GoTerriers.com report

On Wednesday, Commesso spoke to the media about his upcoming Olympic experience. He noted prepping for the World Junior Championships (that were canceled after just one game, a 3-2 US win over The Czech Republic), he was hopeful that he’d have another opportunity to wear a USA sweater. And then the NHL bowed out of the games.

“All the stuff was going on at World Juniors, and one of my best friends, [North Dakota
defenseman] Jake Sanderson, and I were on the bus, ”he said. “We looked at each other when some of the [Olympic] news came out and were like, ‘This could be a possibility for us.’ We were keeping our fingers crossed. ”

Commesso learned of his roster invitation on January 6, just prior to the Arizona State series, and shared the news with his family but not his Terrier teammates.

“We had two big games the following days, so I did not really want anyone in the [BU]
organization to know because I did not want it to be a distraction, ”he said Wednesday. “I was really just focused on playing two great games for the team and worrying about that news later.”

Looking ahead

For the third time in three weeks, BU has added to its recruiting pipeline and for the third time, the player’s name is Jack. Jack Page, a 6’4 ”left shot defenseman in his second season with the New Jersey Rockets, is a 2001 birthdate, so would likely be part of the Terriers’ 2022 recruit class. That class already includes two blueliners: NTDP U18 LD Lane Hutson and West Kelowna Warriors RD Charles-Alexis Legault.

After recording 22 points in 42 games and earning a spot in the USPHL prospects all-star game a year ago, Page has 10 points in 15 games this season. A West Chester, Penn., Native, he played in the Philadelphia Little Flyers and Virtua Hockey youth hockey organizations and had a few call-ups to the NAHL Jamestown Rebels, who drafted him in 2020. He also was drafted that year by USHL Cedar Rapids.

Earlier this week, BU received a commitment from St. Andrews College forward Jack Pridham and just before New Year’s, Victoria Grizzlies power forward Jack Gorton committed. And there are two more Jacks in the pipeline: Madison Capitols LW Jack Musa and Chicago Steel LW Jack Harvey.

Jack Page Elite Prospects page

From the HockeySense analysis of top performers at the All-American Prospects Game:

Lane Hutson, D, NTDP: Hutson had a really nice secondary assist that helped set up Cole Spicer’s goal. It was a perfect encapsulation of what Hutson does best, showing his skill level and decisiveness to cut back and thread a perfect pass to Logan Cooley behind the attacking player and in a spot where Cooley could have a scoring chance. Every time I watch Hutson, I marvel at how often he’s in the right spot, how often he gets a body or a stick on a puck defensively and how creative he can be when the puck is on his stick.

Looking back

Charlie McAvoy‘s 6th goal — a power-play tally in the final minute of regulation — gave the Bruins a 4-3 win against Washington. Matt Grzelcyk picked up his 13th assist for Boston.

Women’s Team

Terriers take on the # 3 Northeastern Huskies in a 4 pm start at Matthews Arena. The game will be televised live on NESN.

Last Saturday, NU defeated the Terriers, 3-1, despite 44 saves by senior goaltender Kate Stuart, who has been named for the National Goalie of the Year Award watch list.
