Trans Japan: sterilization and legal gender recognition
Fumino Sugiyama is a transgender man, but Japanese law means he is not legally recognized as a man.
In Japan, you must be sterilized before you can legally change your gender or “definitely not able to reproduce”.
Researchers say reports of unwanted sterilization have been seen in at least 38 countries in at least 38 countries over the past 20 years because of women and marginalized groups who have experienced “serious rights violations”.
We meet another transgender man who decided to smoke and sterilize to hear the impact of Japanese politics on their lives.
