WBA approves Esteban Bermudez against Carlos Canizales rematch

There’s a bizarre saga that has been flying under the radar over the past few months: the WBA’s attempts to punch “super” lightweight lightweight champion Hiroto Kyoguchi against “world” champion Esteban Bermudez. They only ordered it in June, but Matchroom tried to pull off a quick one and have Bermudez defend his belt against Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez, who asked the WBA to smear them with a rolled up newspaper and drag them back to the negotiating table.

The following month, Matchroom claimed they had finalized a deal, which avoided a looming wallet bid. They were then radio silent for a few months, which led to the WBA giving them a series of deadlines that Matchroom ignored. This led to the WBA re-ordering a wallet bid, but now Kyoguchi is out with an injury.

Bermudez (14-3-2, 10 KO) would rather pass on the man he shocked to claim the belt, Carlos Canizales (23-1-1, 17 KO). The winner (or Bermudez, if it is a tie) must then face Kyoguchi.

Venezuela’s Canizales built up a nice head of steam with overwhelming victories over Lu Bin and Sho Kimura, but spent two years on the sidelines thanks to the pandemic scratch a December 2020 date. Six months later, the unprecedented Bermudez capitalized on “CCC”‘s inactivity by turning him into six.

I suppose this oddity is par for the light flyweight course of recent times. Let’s see if this one comes across the finish line.
